Sir Peter Wright CBE DMus FBSM DLitt

Benesh Notation is the most brilliant and comprehensive way of recording movement. It also safeguards our heritage and new works for future generations, and very importantly, saves a great deal of money and time through the quick, efficient and accurate way ballets can be taught.

Glen Tetley

Benesh Movement Notation is absolutely essential as the working tool, the clear language and the concise memory of the choreographer.

Wayne Sleep OBE DLitt FRSA

If Benesh Notation had existed in John Durang's time in the 18th century, we would at least know if my attempt to recreate his hornpipe for Margot Fonteyn's Magic of the Dance was anything remotely like the original.

Peter Schaufuss The work of The Benesh Institute is of great importance to ballet and dance companies throughout the world.
David Bintley We use Benesh Notation every day in number of ways to aid us in recording and restaging pieces. If we're doing a new ballet we have a notator who takes down the entire ballet. If we're reviving a work we just get the score out and it means a notator can then take the company through that piece without a ballet master having to be there. Everything I do is recorded because it is so easily and so quickly lost. It starts off as small details but in the end you find you lose the whole raison d'etre for why you did a particular movement. In a complex lift, my intention is to get the overall effect, but the notator will be looking exactly where the hands should be and he'll be able to tell the dancer. That day-to-day kind of help, I think, is almost as important as having the thing for the record.
Dame Ninette de Valois OM CH DBE

Benesh Movement Notation fulfils a vital role in the preservation of our dance heritage.
Angelin Preljocaj

Rudolf Nureyev

The Benesh Institute with its teaching of choreology provides a service to the history of ballet. It is a must.

John Neumeier

It always astounds me how quickly a good notator grasps and records movement.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan I am amazed when ballets are re-created without my being there. There it is in front of me all from a piece of paper. My original intention of movement is absolutely caught every time by Benesh Notation.
Marcia Haydée

I would like to express how very important I find notation for the accuracy and speed of re-mounting ballets, and for preserving choreographers' works for us and for the next generation.

Maina Gielgud AO

So we'll have Royal Danish Ballet dancing Nureyev's Don Quixote from Australian Ballet's version with the latest changes from Paris Opera and all that thanks to Benesh Notation.

Dame Margot Fonteyn DBE, Prima Ballerina Assoluta (1979)

Benesh Notation is absolutely invaluable to choreographers and to the preservation of repertoire.

Phyllis M. Fokine

The Benesh Institute is making a unique and valuable contribution to the development of dance. Its translation of today's dances in a fixed form represents our best hope of placing dance on an equal footing with the other arts.

Sir Anthony Dowell CBE The Royal Ballet life would be inconceivable without the use of Benesh Movement Notation. It cuts down the rehearsal time by half. We have an enormous repertoire to put on each season. When we revive works we have a notator in the studio with us and they're there to be asked all the detailed questions…. The teaching process is cut down by half. We have lost so many interesting and varied ballets in the past. Benesh Movement Notation ensures against this happening in the future.
Professor Joan White It is my belief that it is only when we recognise the value if notation will we really have the potential to become educated in dance and that dance as a discipline will come of age and be taken seriously as a subject of study.
Gary Harris Director: Royal New Zealand Ballet The Benesh course was one of the best career moves I made, it has been invaluable for my work as a teacher, repétiteurs and choreographer. Just knowing the basics can really help. It is so simple and logical.
Christopher Hampson There is no better way to record a work. The precision and clarity with which my choreography can be recorded and recreated using Benesh Notation, not only aids the creative process but is an efficient use of time, studio space and therefore money.
Georgina Yacobi ARAD (RAD teacher working
in Israel)
Knowing Benesh has proved really useful. I have been able to teach the boy's syllabus without ever having taken a course on it. I have cleared up so many problems by being able to read the notation - It was certainly an inspired idea to have the vocational syllabus put into BMN.

BENESH NOTATION EDITOR QUOTES:

Leslie Young:
San Francisco Ballet, Graduate: Certificate in BMN

I just hooked up our printer and printed out the Odile solo. It's so pretty!!! I am so excited that the Benesh Notation Editor program exists and just love working with it!

Patricia Tierney:
Notator: Birmingham Royal Ballet

I am thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with the Editor. I’ve never been big on computers but this is really addictive, and my scores look wonderful in print – so easy to read.
Eva Lindstrom: Notator, Royal Swedish Ballet The Benesh Notation Editor training course was fantastic!!! Now I am back to my desk and pencil but I can't wait until the company gets us the program. Thanks again for three inspiring days.
Yuri Uchiumi:
Notator: English National Ballet

What an amazing invention this is! I am totally hooked on the Editor, my only frustration being that I don’t have much free time at the moment.
Patricia Tierney:
Notator: Birmingham Royal Ballet

I am thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with the Editor. I’ve never been big on computers but this is really addictive, and my scores look wonderful in print – so easy to read.
Kendra Johnson: Freelance notator The Benesh Notation Editor, once mastered, is quite simply a joy to use. Unlike pencil master scores, an infinite number of adjustments may be made whilst the pages remain blissfully clean. As a result the master score was completed with greater speed and considerably less heartache. My pencils, once severely overworked, now find themselves in semi-retirement.
