3a - Certificate in Benesh Movement Notation
The Certificate in Benesh Movement Notation (CBMN)
provides a thorough grounding in the principles and usage of the
Benesh notation system for all those with an interest in the observation,
analysis and recording of human movement.
BMN is most widely used in the recording and restaging of dance works,
where it has proved invaluable, both as a day-to-day tool in the
rehearsal studio, and as a means of preserving our dance heritage.
But the Benesh system is, and can be, much more than a means of recording
theatre dance. It has been used successfully by anthropologists,
by physiotherapists to analyse and record patient movement, and even
in an ergonomic study of seating in an airport.
In this programme, you will learn the fundamental principles of BMN
and how to apply these in a number of contexts. The emphasis of the
programme is on reading and recording dance, but whether your interest
is in Ballet or Bharata Natyam, we hope to offer you a stimulating
and useful programme of study.
The CBMN programme is modular in structure, and is delivered by distance
learning, part-time over two years. In exceptional circumstances
where students already have a considerable knowledge of BMN, it may
be possible to give credit for prior learning, allowing students
to complete the programme in a shorter time.
Comprehensive Module Study Guides and a Programme Handbook will provide
you with the teaching, learning and organisational materials that
you will need to complete the programme successfully. Specialist
tutors will advise and support you throughout the programme.
The total study time for the programme is 1200 hours delivered between
January and October. Studies are divided into 10 week periods. Students
will be required to study part-time over two successive years (20
hours per week)
This CBMN programme will enable you to acquire sufficient knowledge
to use the notation as a versatile personal tool. If you wish to
become a professional notator, successful completion of the CBMN
programme will provide the key entry requirement for the Diploma
for Professional Benesh Movement Notators.
Entry Requirements
This programme is delivered and assessed in English. If English is
not your first language you will need to provide evidence that shows
you have a competent use of the English language, for example you
could obtain one of the following:
We need to know that you have some knowledge of dance/human movement,
as evidenced by your personal statement on the application form,
but we require no formal academic qualifications. You will be called
for interview (either in person or by phone), to discuss your interest
in movement and BMN and to assess your suitability to undertake a
distance learning programme.
Award
Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of the
Certificate in Benesh Movement Notation, validated by the Royal
Academy of Dance.
