Starter Courses (Dance)
This
is one of three starter courses designed for people interested
in studying Benesh Movement Notation as a means of recording dance.
These courses cover essentially the same notation concepts but
differ in the movement vocabulary used to illustrate them: The
Introductory Study Course in BMN (1b) uses the notation in a variety
of dance contexts, Reading Course One (1a) and Distance Learning
Course One (!c) focus on the ballet vocabulary
1c - Distance Learning Course One (Dance)
This
course is for anyone who wishes to learn about the Benesh system
of movement notation within a classical ballet context. A distance
learning alternative to Reading Course One, it is particularly
relevant to teachers and students wishing to study the notated
Royal Academy of Dance Vocational Syllabus and dances from the
ballet repertoire.
Aim
To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of Benesh
Movement Notation that will enable them to read and write ballet
enchaînements and solos.
Content
A study of the basic principles of Benesh Movement Notation
as applied to the single performer in the context of classical
ballet including: movements of the limbs and body, direction faced,
turns, floor patterns and the expression of rhythm.
Practice in recording ballet exercises and enchaînements

reading ballet exercises and enchaînements

Entry requirements
A ready ability to read English text.
A good knowledge of ballet vocabulary and terminology is advantageous
Award
On completion of the course students may apply to sit a written
examination. Success in the examination leads to the award of the
Elementary
Certificate in Benesh Movement Notation - Writing (Dance).
